What I did on my summer vacation
It's not summer without a visit to Utah. We drove out to Park City and found a wonderful farmer's market, with the cutest bookmobile ever. I had my son take this picture, just to prove what a library nerd I am. Unfortunately there was no yarn to be found today.

I {heart} Utah
I spent Valentine's Weekend in Utah with my # 2 son and husband. On the way out of town my guys insisted on dropping me off at Blazing Needles before heading to the airport. The ladies there were so nice and I left with a new project (Rav link) for spring in Habu yarn, the latest copy of Knit Scene, buttons for a WIP, and a little prize for the library's Sit 'n Stitch program the next day.
We skied our hearts out with some of our family at Snowbasin and Powder Mountain. I managed to forget my hat one day, but my son let me borrow his. He's just awesome like that. (I didn't know just how useful this hat would be when I knit it for him last year.)
Let me also tell you that my MIL runs the best B&B in the West. Her lunches are the tastiest on the mountain, because they are packed with love. We <3 Grandma B!

Happy New Year
All my chickens came home to the roost for the holidays. This makes me happy. Check out these handknits still going strong one year later. Happy New Year friends!

reflections on getting older

Tomorrow is my birthday and I am feeling reflective.
I spent the afternoon with my mom at her assisted living apartment.
My mom taught me how to knit when I was about 8, 40-something years ago. She was an incredible knitter.
Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease about a year ago. It really wasn't a surprise--there were so many symptoms that made us know something was wrong. She moved into this assisted living place (she is still in the independent part) in January. It has been a wonderful change for her, and lately she has been trying to get back to some knitting projects. It is very difficult for her, and this afternoon I was reading each line of the directions for a mitten. She is still a skilled knitter, but following the directions is very hard.
While I was there the tornado sirens went off. We took the knitting into the bathroom and just hunkered down--me reading out each line with all the patience I could muster (at the same time I was texting my 16-year old to make sure he was somewhere safe) and her knitting.
The mitten came out beautiful, and I helped her cast on for the second one.
